San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic – 2008. San Francisco de Macoris is a small city situated in Duarte Province in the northern portion of the Dominican Republic. It is the capital of the Duarte Province, and the sixth most populated city in the country The city is known as the Land of Cacao because of the amount of organic cocoa produced in the area and we visited the Instituto Dominicano de Investigaciones Agropecuarias y Forestales which is a research centre for the growing of cacao (chocolate) beans. San Francisco de Macoris is not a tourist area and we saw very few foreigners while we were there. The Habitat building site we were at was on the northwest outskirts of the city.
